Modern industrial automation is no longer only about moving signals reliably from the field to the control system. As critical plants become more interconnected, engineers also need greater visibility into installed devices, simpler commissioning, faster diagnostics and reliable access to field information. For safety-related and process I/O applications, this connectivity must be achieved without adding unnecessary complexity to the architecture.

- The Gateway as the Digital Access Point to X1
This is where the X1-GW-01 Gateway from G.M. International plays a central role. Designed specifically for the X1 Series, the X1-GW-01 provides the digital interface between the Series' intelligent modules and the wider automation environment. It enables identification, configuration, monitoring, debugging and data acquisition, while providing connectivity to PCs, PLCs, DCS/PAC systems and industrial networks through standard communication interfaces.
More than a communication converter, the Gateway acts as the management and connectivity layer of the X1 Series.
One Gateway, Centralized Access to X1 Modules
The X1 Series combines three fundamental elements: modules for individual signal loops, termination boards that hold and supply the modules, and an optional Gateway that translates standard industrial protocols into the X1 proprietary internal bus. Installed on the termination board, the X1-GW-01 provides a single access point to the connected X1 modules. Depending on the termination-board configuration, the Gateway can manage up to 16 channels, allowing engineers to work with multiple modules through one interface.
This centralized approach can simplify commissioning and maintenance. Instead of accessing each module individually, users can identify the installed hardware, retrieve module information, configure supported parameters and access diagnostic data through the Gateway. The architecture also supports larger installations. Multiple Gateways can be connected within an X1 network, enabling the system to be supervised and controlled through a wider communication architecture.
From USB-C Engineering Access to Industrial Ethernet
One of the key advantages of the X1-GW-01 is its flexible connectivity. For commissioning, configuration and engineering activities, the Gateway can communicate directly with a PC or IPC through USB-C, using the dedicated SWCX1 software.
For integration with an automation system, the Gateway provides:
- MODBUS TCP/IP through Ethernet RJ45
- MODBUS RTU through RS485
This means the same X1 installation can provide both a convenient local engineering interface and a standard industrial communication path to higher-level systems.
With the configuration software SWCX1, the system can be managed from a single entry point, with the software presenting the connected termination boards and providing access to the parameters and operations of individual boards or modules. The software can manage up to 256 channels from a single-entry point.
One Gateway, Multiple Smart Functions
The real value of the X1-GW-01 becomes evident when looking beyond communication. The Gateway provides access to the smart functions embedded in the X1 Series.
Identification
The Gateway can identify the connected modules by family, while smart modules can provide identification down to the specific serial number. Termination-board models can also be recognized.
For commissioning teams, this creates a more transparent view of what is actually installed in the cabinet.
Configuration
Supported smart modules can expose configurable parameters through the Gateway. Depending on the module, this may include application-specific settings such as field-device selection or diagnostic activation.
Monitoring and Debugging
The Gateway can continuously acquire field and internal variables from smart modules. Depending on the module, this can include quantities such as voltage, current, resistance or 4/20 mA loop current. It can also access internal module status and Mission Time information, supporting debugging and predictive-maintenance activities through automatic continuous scanning. This transforms the Gateway from a simple protocol interface into a practical source of operational information for maintenance and engineering teams.
Connectivity with Security and Access Control
Greater connectivity also requires controlled access:
The X1 Gateway architecture incorporates cybersecurity-oriented functions including different user roles with limited access rights, single-session enforcement, event logging and configuration-change indication.
The X1-GW-01 supports three user profiles:
- Observer – read-only access
- Maintenance – access to application-level operations
- Administrator – extended access to configuration, communication and cybersecurity parameters
Password management and controlled access help ensure that the ability to configure or modify the X1 system remains appropriately restricted. The Gateway also manages communication sessions so that only one interface is active at a time, helping maintain controlled interaction between local engineering access and industrial communication.
Compact Hardware for Industrial Applications
All of this functionality is delivered through a compact Gateway mounted directly on the X1 termination board. The X1 Series itself is designed around a compact 10 mm-per-channel architecture, with an extended operating temperature range of –40 °C to +70 °C and Functional Safety capability up to SIL 3 with Systematic Capability SC 3.
The Gateway therefore fits naturally into the overall X1 architecture rather than being an external communication device added around it.
The Gateway as the Digital Access Point to X1
The X1-GW-01 brings together the functions increasingly expected from modern industrial I/O architectures: connectivity, configuration, diagnostics, monitoring, cybersecurity and data access. For commissioning engineers, it provides a practical way to identify and configure the installed X1 system. For maintenance teams, it offers greater visibility into module status and operating information. For system integrators, it provides standard communication interfaces for connecting X1 data to the automation network.
Most importantly, it gives the X1 Series a clear digital access point — connecting intelligent field interfaces with the systems responsible for supervising, controlling and maintaining the plant.
